How to build a Market Basket Analysis Engine

A market basket analysis or recommendation engine [1] is what is behind all these recommendations we get when we go shopping online or whenever we receive targeted advertising. The underlying engine collects information about people’s habits and knows that if people buy pasta and wine, they are usually also interested in pasta sauces. So, the next time you go to the supermarket and buy pasta and wine, be ready to get a recommendation for some pasta sauce! A typical analysis goal when applying…See More

Is opensource enough? The Need for an Open Architecture Analytics

The job of a data analyst nowadays has become very extensive, in its need to cover a number of different and ever-changing tasks.A data analyst must query a variety of internal and external data sources, each with a different access protocol and format; integrate these data with results from REST and web services queried over the Internet, such as Google API or any social media channel; exchange information with business analysts, who, while lacking the deep mathematical background, are still…See More

Model Deployment: the "Now What?" effect

Model DeploymentI have built a model that scores 99.9% accuracy! Great! Fantastic! Now what? This is what a colleague of mine calls the "Now what?" effect. After training, testing, and optimizing a model repeatedly, we get this fantastic performance on the evaluation set. Now it is the time to put your model to good use on real life, maybe streaming, data. This phase is called Model Deployment.Usually, a deployment-dedicated workflow reads the incoming new data, applies the previously trained,…See More

Accessing Big Data with KNIME

Once established that it would be beneficial to integrate a big data platform into the corporate analytics ecosystem, the problem has just started.First, you need to select your platform among the many choices available on the market. Then, you need to configure your analytics environment so that any script/workflow can connect and run on the big data platform of choice. Notice, also, that we are just at the beginning of the big data era: the winners of today might not seem the best choice in a…See More
