Not sure if this has any practical applications, other than to write a virus. But I am just curious about it.

Have you ever written a program that self-replicates, and what did you do to stop it? For instance, let''s say a program that writes a program (a copy of itself but with a different name) and then executes the program in question. If interrupted, it can be resumed where it stopped (just like a web crawler) for instance automatically when booting your machine.

What is your experience with this kind of program?
