Getting a job in US from India although not impossible but is a different game altogether. Certifications, be it SAS or any other does help your resume look good but one should not think that it gives him/her a ticket to US. Companies need to sponsor(H1B) a person so that he/she can work here and there are many legalities involved which majority of the companies would like to refrain from. My intention is not to discourage you but to share with you some facts. One way for you is to get in some good company in India preferably a MNC and get some good work experience and develop an expertise in the analytical field. May be from there you can have on site opportunities. Having a 3-4 years of a rigorous analytical experience might increase your chances. Although you can try applying in companies here and based on the response, you will have much more clear idea of where you stand in the market.
I guess you need to figure out what component of SAS you would be using for your job like SAS/STAT or SAS EM etc. Going through SAS support documentation should help you decide it. Currently, I am using SAS EM for my coursework in Data Mining. SAS is not a free software it would cost a hefty amount. I am assuming you are in India and so getting SAS easily and at a cheap price should not be a problem ;). I guess with some effort you will easily have a grasp on SAS but if your really want to be in analytical field you should try to analyze some sample data for which you can use SAS. This will give you more of a application side of view and how actual analysis is done and how one can use SAS for data analysis.
Well, we both are in the same boat :) I am primarily a software side person but have done my Masters in Data Mining and am too looking for job in Data Analytics. Perhaps a person similar to your background can find his space in Biological Data Analysis. There is an emerging market in field of Biology requiring Data Analysis. Perhaps this should help you and a person with such a background should be able to help you more than me.
Given your pharma background, if statistical analysis or Data Mining is pivotal in your research/job, having SAS as a skill on your resume will definitely give a great boost. Certification in this case does serve as a testimony to your expertise in SAS and would also indicate that you are proficient with a Statistical analysis tool. Also, SAS today is the most used industrially or research tool for analytical purposes.
