Short Bio:
My first life is as a professor at the University of Alaska. My second life is as a consultant. I have worked on projects in biology and social sciences.
I have a master's degree in mathematics and another MS in Statistics.
I am interested in sampling, modeling and probability. My most interesting project so far is about spatial analysis of archeology sites in Alaska. I can do Bayesian statistics, factor analysis, spatial statistics and all kinds of sampling.

Meta-analysis "how to"

Posted on October 14, 2008 at 10:54am 0 Comments

I am working on a paper right now where meta-analysis is a key element. Here is an excerpt from the methods section. The equations didnt copy so I used some short hand notation instead.

The goal is to estimate the reporting rate (p^) of electronic tags using success/failure as reported in 53 journal articles as data.

We analyzed the PSAT reporting rates using re-sampling methods (Efron 1979, 1988; Efron and Tibshirani, 1986; Manly, 2001; Gurevitch and Hedges, 1999). We… Continue

Double Sampling and Calibrating a visitor usage meter

Posted on March 26, 2008 at 5:11am 0 Comments

Ive been consulting with a National Park on how to improve estimates of visitor usage. they have door mounted meters but these are not considered very accurate. Here is a summary of my sample design:

SUMMARY: National Park Administrators are required to file monthly reports of visitor totals at various park facilities such as visitor centers. Although door mounted meters can and are used to estimate these totals, there are issues with the quality of meter counts. Meters are… Continue

Bayesian Mark Recapture for Small Sample Sizes

Posted on March 11, 2008 at 11:52am 0 Comments

I gave a short seminar at National Marine Fisheries Services NMFS in Honolulu, Hawaii, entitled "Bayesian Mark-Recapture for Small Sample Sizes"

Mark-recapture methods are often used to estimate the abundance of rare or elusive populations but produce highly uncertain results when sample sizes are small. We develop a new estimator for a single-release, single-recapture experiment based on Bayesian methodology to handle this situation. The number of marked… Continue

Spatial analysis and archeology

Posted on February 23, 2008 at 9:15am 0 Comments

I presented a seminar at School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences at University of Alaska Fairbanks.

SUMMARY: GIS maps reveal that archeological sites in the Gulf of Alaska region are highly clustered. Crowell et al., has suggested that clustering of sites is driven by spatial patterns of 24 marine resources. These resources are known to be important from bone fragments found at archeological sites and also from oral histories. We constructed a data base of subsistence resources… Continue
