A bioinformatics competition to better understand HIV

According to the World Health Organization, HIV has caused 25 millions deaths worldwide since it was first recognized in 1981. In recent years, the infection has been managed with a collection of therapies. However, the virus will likely evolve around these drugs, making it crucially important that we get a better understanding of the virus itself.

An important step in understanding the virus is to get a handle on its genetic blueprint. William Dampier of Drexler University is hosting… Continue

The Ash Cloud: Risk Analytics at their worst

The Ash cloud that spread across Europe was considered (by authorities) unsafe for flying for several days, resulting in a loss of $1 billion to airlines. The conclusion was based solely on one test involving simulated data.

This raises a few issues:

- Good sense has been ignored. If flights had not been canceled (except in case of one single major issue such as plane crash or engine failure or problematic plane damage), the loss would have been much less than $1… Continue

Computer Science Loses to Math in New Hiring Formula

Being a math geek has never been cooler, at least in Silicon Valley.

As Bay Area technology companies ramp up hiring out of the recession, they are in hot pursuit of a particular kind of employee: those with experience in statistics and other data-manipulation techniques.

Rather than looking for just plain-vanilla computer scientists, who typically don't have as deep a study of math and statistics, companies from Facebook Inc. to online advertising company AdMob Inc. say… Continue

Customer abandonment to improve ROI

Example: let say that airline ABC treats customers very well for the first 20,000 miles (new clients get window or aisle seats), but after that you get treated poorly (you always get a middle seat). As a result, some faithful clients switch to another airlines XYZ after a while. But XYZ plays the same game: window or aisle seat for the first 20,000 miles, then always a middle seat.

Is this a viable long-term business model? Essentially ABC and XYZ focus on stealing clients away from… Continue

Brand building strategies

What are the pros and cons of the following strategies:

- highly centralized: one web site, one name, one brand

- decentralized: multiple names and brands

I'm trying to compare 3 branding strategies used by 3 analytic networks:

- Analyticbridge: decentralized, multiple brands and networks (e.g. analyticbridge, datashaping, etc.), internally funded but funding is limited (< $200K), leverages word of mouth

- KDnuggets: highly centralized, little… Continue
