Changes required to Database Maangement as we know it.

Since the day computers were created system started creating data in form of BIT and BYTES. In a short span of time this data becomes so huge making it necessary to have a system that can store and use it. The solution that came into existence was Database Management System. Journey started from Simple Text file to RDBMS to ORDBMS. Now time has progressed and RDBMS or if we say ORDBMS are no longer capable to store and manage the data alone because of their basic requirement that there…

The Information-Money Equation

It is a known fact that Business Intelligence (BI) initiatives require a good amount of investment and time by the business. But organizations need to drive these initiatives not with a "cost" mindset but instead with a "profit" mindset.

The money invested in BI initiatives is meant to generate actionable information for timely decision making. It pays to note here that this actionable information can generate money many times over for the business.

The success of the BI…

An Introduction to Unstructured Data

Organizations everywhere are beginning to feel mounting pressure to collect and store any form of data they can get their hands on. From nonprofits collecting data on the populations they serve to social media giants looking for ways to monetize, data of any kind is the raw good that most organizations this century will look to spin into piles of gold.

The challenge right now, however,…

Big Data thinking - What makes Big Data different?

What separate a Big data from a huge data? I have seen the abuse of Big Data being adopted by the database and BI vendors. It lacks the spirit. Merely calculating faster or storing more should not qualify for a Big Data thinking. It is purely technological breakthrough - just like having a faster CPU. Will you call an intel CPU i7 a change of era from i5? Here are my observations and principles to be Big Data:

1. Collect the impossible

With the emergence of e-government, more…

novel itemset representations based on prefix-tree nodes for frequent itemset mining

In recent years, I proposed three new kinds of data structure to represent itemsets. They are Node-list [1], N-list [2], and Nodeset [3]. They use prefix-tree nodes to represent itemsets instead of the set of tranaction ids.

Since prefix-tree is usually high compressed, Node-list [1], N-list [2], and Nodeset [3] are much shorten than Tidset or diffset, which are two classical vertical representatnion of itemsets. Therefore, for frequent itemset mining, the algorithms based on Node-list,…

Analytics Revolution - Why the struggle for growth?

IT majors have been excited about the convergence of Social, Cloud, Analytics and Mobility (SCAM).  It is widely believed that these will be the engines of growth in the future. Rightly so. N Chandrasekaran, CEO of TCS, India’s largest technology services provider, recently referred to the SCAM as "digital forces" and estimates that these digital forces would be a $3-5 billion opportunity in the next few years.  A Gartner study has reported that the SCAM market will be worth $107 billion by…

Anemic Adoption still ailing BI

Here is an excerpt from a TDWI article - "The Year in BI and Data Warehousing" - that was published in December 2013.

"One of the things that ailed BI in 1993 and 2003 is the same thing that ails BI today: i.e., anemic adoption. This is in spite of the fact that today's BI tools incorporate a staggering array of "self-service" features, along with (often…
