Thank you for removing the full PDF, Vincent.  We are super-excited about everyone blogging and communicating about the results of our 2013 Data Miner Survey.  We just want to be the ones to distribute the full PDF reports.  Thanks for understanding!

Here are some of the highlights that we think AnalyticBridge readers will be interested to know about:
  • This is the 6th Data Miner Survey (the 1st was in 2007)
  • Over 1250 analytic professionals from 75 countries participated
  • The majority of people see increases in the number of project and analytic staffing is growing
  • Job satisfaction among analytic professionals is high, and increasing slightly from previous years
  • Analytic professionals answer to many labels.  Favorites include Data Scientist, Researcher, and Data Analyst.
  • Analytic tools:
    • The average data miner reports using 5 software tools
    • R is the tool used by the most data miners (70%) -- this is a dramatic increase since 2007, when 23% used R
    • IBM SPSS Statistics, Rapid Miner, and SAS also have many users
    • R is also the primary data mining tool chosen most often (24%)
    • Many data miners also select STATISTICA, Rapid Miner, or SAS as their primary tool
    • STATISTICA, KNIME, SAS JMP and IBM SPSS Modeler receive the highest satisfaction ratings
  • "Big Data" -- Hype or Reality?
    • In 2013, the perception is that data volumes have increased
    • But since 2007, respondents report datasets of fairly consistent sizes
    • Few people report that their companies have active big data programs
We presented the highlights of the 2013 Data Miner Survey at the Fall-2013 Predictive Analytics World (PAW) Boston event. Please visit for more information about the series of 2007-2013 Data Miner Surveys, and email us at [email protected] to request a copy of the PAW presentation or for a FREE copy of the 2011 full summary report.  We are working now to complete our analyses.  We will send out the complete 2013 Data Miner Survey Report summary deck later this month.

Note: I believe that the respondents represent KDNuggets more than us: they are bigger consumers of open source data mining tools than our visitors (we have a higher proportion of enterprise software users).
