A new idea for an analytic business startup

Digitized hand-written signatures. For people regularly dealing with entities such as governments or paper-loving companies requesting manually signed documents (W9, etc.), here's an online solution: a new startup offering to automatically get your documents signed without using paper nor a scanner. Here's how it works:

  1. When you sign up, you enter your full name in text format (ASCII) on a web form
  2. A web app will offer you 20 possible graphical signatures based on your name
  3. You select one graphic signature
  4. Next time you log-on to the website to submit a document (Word or PDF), your signature will automatically be added as a PNG image with a background color matching your document background. It will then electronically be sent to your target fax number or email address. The recipient will never know that the transaction did not involve paper.

Question: would this technology eventually kill the scanner?

Anything to eliminate paper, fax machines (seriously, who uses a fax?), and otherwise streamline and reduce the piles that appear in an office is a great idea. But this one may have already been taken. There are several iPad apps and non-iPad apps that already place your signature (including your actual signature via camera capture) on a document.

In The Netherlands where I live, we have a similar technique, is called DigID: It is a digital signature implementation concept, introduced by the government. You signup and a username password is sent to you by normal post. You can then use those for any interaction you have with the governmental web sites.
