Works of business analyst BA explained

I have a lot of embarrassing moments when my friends and relatives ask me about my job: what do you do in fact? I analyze business.

I am very often mistaken as an IT professional, the smarter people thinks that I work as an internal consultant to strategy development: doing financial modeling, presentations and advising management on strategic issue of the firm. This understanding is still far from the perfect view of my work. To help any students and interested people (even friends and family members) to know about the profession, I will explain about the different Business analysts and then go deeper to explain how I analyze business for business development.

Classifications
1. Strategic business analysts: this type of business analysts work on strategy reviews by looking at the marketing strategy, resources allocations like finance and HR and deliver financial projection.

2. Business development/ marketing business analysts: this type of BA focuses on customer. By looking at the customer data, they refines and defines the short to medium term (1-2 year)at the customer activities and understand the behavior of the clients, which may or may not yield any business plan as a result of the work, sometimes he/she answers questions from the internal clients. These people have the skills of project management.

3. Analytic business analysts: these types of BA bring the world of Information technology to the management's ears. They could be sub-divided into reporting and predictive modeling. I started with reporting and later on move to predictive modeling.

4. Operations business analysts: this is the most common type of BA. They understand the workflow and business process, translating into process map and business requirements of the system.

5. IT business analysts: this type of BA is similar to the operational BA, but they report to the IT department. They write the hard-core business requirements and deal directly with programmers.

My current job has 5-10% to 1, 20% 2, 70% 3 and 0-5% 4. All of these job types require you to speak of their languages when you are in that field.

Next time, I will talk about what exactly each job does.
